Our Journey of Hope:
Two Decades of Transformation

From Humble Beginnings

Nyumba Ya Tumaini was founded by Ben Muya in 2002 under the patronage of the late Pastor Charles Baraza. It began as a feeding program at Shauri Moyo Baptist Church, providing food, clothing, and hygiene care to over 300 street-connected children and youth. This initial outreach laid the groundwork for our deeper commitment.

A Necessary Evolution

In 2003, recognizing the escalating dangers of street life – abuse, violence, and neglect – the program relocated to Ongata Rongai. This move allowed us to establish a safe, residential haven where boys could escape these perils. For over 18 years, we have transformed the lives of over 500 children, providing them with a nurturing community and a path to a brighter future.

Empowering Sustainable Futures

Our work extends beyond immediate rescue. We empower boys with vocational skills in mechanics, carpentry, and masonry, equipping them for sustainable livelihoods. We also facilitate family reunification, believing that a child's best place is within a loving family and community.

The Urgent Challenge We Address

Our journey began at Shauri Moyo Baptist Church, providing essentials to over 300 street-connected children. This experience revealed a deeper crisis: the urgent need for a safe haven away from the violence, abuse, and neglect of street life. This is why Nyumba Ya Tumaini exists.

  • 500+ Lives Transformed (Over 20 years of dedicated service.)

  • 20 Years of Service (Founded in 2002, our commitment is unwavering.)

  • 100% Community Focused (Building sustainable futures within their own communities.)

Our Programs and Activities

  • Education & Vocational Training

We provide crucial support for primary, secondary, and tertiary education. For older youth, we offer vocational training in high-demand trades like mechanics, carpentry, and masonry.

  • Mental Health & Psychosocial Support

Recognizing the trauma often experienced on the streets, we offer robust support systems to enhance the emotional, mental, social, physical, and spiritual well-being of children and their families.

  • Basic Needs & Shelter

Providing a safe, stable environment is the first step. We ensure access to nutritious food, clean water, appropriate clothing, medical care, and a secure shelter, offering immediate relief from the harsh realities of street life.

  • Family Reunification & Support

Our dedicated social workers work tirelessly to trace families and facilitate safe, supported reunification. We also provide ongoing support to families to ensure children remain within nurturing home environments

  • Community Integration & Life Skills

Beyond family, we connect boys to broader community programs, cultural activities, and recreational facilities. We also teach essential life skills, preparing them for independent living and responsible citizenship.
